Copper phone uses heat for power

Patrick Hyland is working on creating a "charger-free cell phone future." This means lowering electricity consumption and no annoying chargers anymore. He's proposed a cell phone that charges with heat. A conductive copper skin transmits heat to a thermogenerator inside, producing electricity when the phone is placed on a radiator or inside a pocket.

Pressed Chair by Harry Thaler

Pressed chair is a pressed aluminium chair designed by Harry Thaler that can be bent into shape into a super-light stackable chair.

The chair which is light enough to be lifted with only two fingers, is extremely strong without any external structural support. Instead decorative features pressed into the sheet provide the required strength once the chair is bent into shape.

French designers Ronan and Erwan Bouroullec have created a collection of tableware for Italian brand Alessi. This is how Ronan and Erwan described the project: the Ovale collection strives to be original, but it also wants to be rustic and traditional.

See-through touchscreen mobile phone

Designed for Samsung, the “AQUA” by South Korean designer Bon Seop Ku is a cellphone concept, inspired by drawing on the table with water, which features a progressive design to attract next-gen customers. 

The cellphone runs on liquid type battery that apart from being eco-friendly supports the transparency of the screen as well.

More and more people are harvesting rainwater in their gardens and a new eco-inspired garden table by Simon Davies can help stylish gardeners do just that. Rain water that lands on the outdoor table flows directly into a tank located below the table top.

“Etirement” desgined by Rémi Bouhaniche

Rémi Bouhaniche, a french graduate designed the "Etirement", a poetic time from a daily action”, a lamp that is dimmed by distorting its surface. It features a translucent membrane stretched over a steel frame. The level of the light’s intensity can be raised or lowered according to the distortion of the fabric membrane.

Danish bicycle company Biomega launched the LDN by Ross Lovegrove today. This bike has a wishbone shaped one-piece carbon fibre frame with a hole to save weight and allow the bike to be wall-hung.

Andromeda by Ross Lovegrove

Andromeda, LED pendant lamp by Ross Lovegrove for the Japanese lighting brand Yamagiwa. The lamp has clusters of LEDs embedded at the cross-points of the hard polyurethane foam form. Mirrors can be repositioned within the structure to reflect the light in different directions.

Apple iPhone4

When creating iPhone 4, Apple designers and engineers didn’t start with a clean sheet of paper. They started with three years of experience designing and building the phones that redefined what a phone can do. iPhone 4 is the result of everything they’ve learned so far. Lego and Muji teamed up

The Japanese retail brand MUJI and LEGO teamed up to develop a set of 4 different boxes. Inside those boxes you’ll find the classic LEGO bricks but also a few sheets of paper. When you have the right punch hole tool, you can combine both to create something new. 

Mercedes expanding towards industrial design

Mercedes has announced that "the portfolio of the newly established 'Mercedes-Benz Style' division will comprise not only transport-related products, but also furniture and lifestyle products and industrial design" through special licensing agreements.

Is this a sign of the (economic) times that even Mercedes is now trying to turn their design resources into a new revenue stream?!? It is interesting that primarily German and Italian car firms branching out, while the Japanese auto manufacturers, which have similarly strong cultures of design, have not.

For now, mid-level design firms will have little to fear from Mercedes; for now that firm will focus on the luxury vehicle market, tackling helicopters and yachts.

Recycled cardboard furniture

Lazerian Studio,  a collaboration between furniture designer Liam Hopkins and artist Richard Sweeney, they transform simple sheets of recycled cardboard into beautiful furnishings such as their sofa, giving the material a new lease of life. 

Their Borealis lampshades and Mensa coffee table are created from CNC machined plywood, showcasing the designer’s skill in pushing a wide range of materials to their sculptural limit. The designers aim to create minimal waste through their use of repeated forms.

Outdoor furniture that lits up!

The so-called Bright Woods collection from Gruppo Avanzini employs stripes of various kinds of wood with resin infill between each layer. At the moment it still works on batteries until they will find a rechargeable method.

The lights, in this outdoor furniture, come in handy in the evening as no other lights are necessary. The lights also come in different colours in order to create the ambiance you prefer.
